Medications

NSAIDS

Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatories are often used to bring down inflammation, decreasing pain and stiffness. NSAIDS can have serious side effects and their use should be closely monitored. Some common NSAIDS are Quellin, Deramaxx, Metcam, and Rimadyl.

Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids, such as Prednisone, may be used instead of NSAIDs but it is not common because the long term side effects of steroid use tend to be more serious than with NSAID use. Steroids and NSAIDs should never be given together as this can cause serious gastrointestinal issues.

Opioids/Partial Opioids

Other pain medications such as morphine derivatives, tramadol, and gabapentin may be used to help relieve pain. These are often used in conjunction with NSAIDs which is safe and allow the use of lower doses of each medication.

Adequan

Adequan is a polysulfated glycosaminoglycan made from the cartilage of cattle. It helps prevent the cartilage in the joint from wearing away, keeps it healthy and intact so that the bone in the joint is protected. These injections are sometimes given in addition to one or more other treatments.
